Chronic Pain Management and Prevention in Ayurveda-Part 3

Chronic Pain Management and Prevention in Ayurveda -Part 3

The combination of both Snehana (Abhyanga) and Swedana (application of the medicated
oil & medicated steam application ) is a clinically proven and effective non- invasive form of therapeutic measure in management of chronic /neuropathic pain.
Ayurvedic Panchkarma treatments have been very effective and play a major role in treatment of Chronic Pain.

 Specialized Ayurvedic Panchkarma treatments:

 Wisdom of External Basti treatment:

The different types of external Basti treatments in Ayurveda is a method where medicated, analgesic, anti-inflammatory oil is “held” in a well /dough dam(made from flour of a specific grain and lentil flour), localised over the affected area, whether it be on the back, neck, knees, shoulder, heart etc.
The dough dam/well holds the oil at a relatively high and comfortable temperature, so the oil and the herbs in it can penetrate all layers of skin, deep into tissues of muscle including tendons, ligaments and bone tissues.
Benefits of medicated Basti:

  • Pacifies one of the primary sites of Vata, relieving pain, soreness, restoring flexibility.
  • Increases the circulation in the region, as the herbal oil gets deeply absorbed into the skin, and both nourishes and strengthens the muscles and nerves.
  • Relieves chronic lower backaches and painful muscle spasms, stiffness, and degenerative problems.
  • Regenerates tissues effectively.
  • Relieves muscle and joint inflammatory processes.
  • Relieves back, joints and neck pains

Types of Basti:

  • Greeva Basti-Ayurveda offers the best remedies for neck pain and related painful conditions and cervical issues. It provides a significant and appreciable relief in many painful neck related conditions like cervical spondylosis, cervical injuries  etc.

  • Kati Basti-This specialized therapy relieves and nourishes the lower back using herbal oils or ghee. Relieves chronic lower backaches and painful muscle spasms, stiffness, and degenerative problems.

  •  It is used in painful conditions of knee joints and especially useful to restore lubricant fluid in the joint and maintain integrity of the structures involved in the joint.Proven to be effective in cases of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, stiffness and pain in knee joints, age related changes in knee joints.

  Pinda Sweda:

Pinda sweda is a combination of massage and sweating therapy used in musculoskeletal problems. The body and its aching joints and muscles are massaged vigorously with warm herbal bags draining toxins and giving relief to pain and tension in the affected areas.

Swedana is a treatment procedure in which sweat is induced by application of heat and warmth in the form of steam or by bringing the body / body parts in contact with heated medicaments (powders, leaves, processed rice and herbs along with milk, sand etc) tied in parcels/poultice.

Proven to be very effective in diseases like Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lumbar spondylosis, Cervical spondylosis, Musculoskeletal pains, etc.

Thus Ayurveda offers a unique way of managing chronic pain naturally without any side effects and provides relief for a long duration of time.
